The Downtown Networking Association

The Downtown Networking Association (DNA) is a woman's organization aimed at promoting networking, personal & professional development, and community involvement among young, professional women who work in downtown Vancouver. The DNA evolved in response to a perceived need for an organization that would facilitate interaction and networking among the hundreds of young, professional women working in downtown Vancouver. Dress for Success

Dress for Success is an organization committed to helping women help themselves by encouraging businesswomen to donate suits, and then giving them to lower-income women to wear for job interviews. Referred by a wide group of non-profit organizations including homeless shelters, domestic violence shelters and job training programs, each Dress for Success client receives one suit when she has an interview and a second when she receives the job. Digital Eve
We are Vancouver's newest resource for women with a passion for the digital world. Our aim is to provide women of all ages, backgrounds, and experience levels an environment where they may learn about technology; a supportive community where questions, ideas, and creativity are shared. A Digital Eve Vancouver membership allows you to take advantage of regular workshops, monthly networking events, and a discussion forum. Members can also check out the hottest technology through our Job Board, take part in a special interest group and read great thought provoking articles.

Canadian Women Voters Congress

The Canadian Women Voters Congress was founded on July 1, 1996. As a non-partisan member organization, the mandate is to encourage women to use their voice within the political system.

The Congress presents The Women’s Campaign School with Simon Fraser University at Harbour Centre. The School is the only one of its kind in Canada, teaching women the political skills, strategies and tactics to run a winning campaign. The Congress works with several organizations to support its mandate such as the YWCA along with women’s committees of the various political parties.

The Congress is currently building an international relationship with The League of Women Voters and has an on-going relationship with the Women’s Campaign School at Yale University.

Women's Resources Centre

The Women's Resources Centre (WRC) is a downtown community-based service of UBC Continuing Studies, offering personal and career planning and development for women and men. The Centre has been in operation since 1973 and is used by nearly 25,000 people each year. Programs are facilitated by professional counsellors and instructors. Free drop-in counselling is offered by trained peer counsellors under the supervision of director Ruth Sigal, a registered psychologist. Atira Transition House Society

Atira Transition House Society is a feminist identified organization that operates seven programs for women who have experienced violence/abuse, and their children. In 1987, the Society opened its first transition house, Atira, in the South Surrey/White Rock community. In 1993, the Society expanded its services to include a support program for children who witness abuse, and in 1997, Shimai House (a specialized transition house for women also struggling with their use of substances) and Koomseh Second- Stage Housing Program opened. Most recently, three new programs were added: a senior women’s outreach program, a parenting program, and an outreach program for First Nations and Métis women.

To make a referral to Atira House, call 531-9151 or 531- 4430, or Shimai call 581-9100 or 581-9110. Both are staffed 24 hours a day, seven days a week and women are welcome to self refer.

Women In Film & Video Vancouver is a non-profit society founded in 1989 to support, advance, promote and celebrate the professional development and achievements of women working in British Columbia’s film, television, video and multimedia industries. Our members network at monthly Breakfast Club meetings and through bi-weekly listservs. Moving Up! The Royal Bank Mentorship Program helps focus and advance career paths. We host the Walking Talking Heads seminar series and the Women in the Spotlight awards gala. We publish a quarterly newsletter and The Producer’s Workbook, a comprehensive guide to the Canadian production scene.

The Wired Woman Society

Founded in Vancouver by visionary Emma Smith in 1996, The Wired Woman Society is Canada's leading group for women who are interested in high technology. Wired Woman's mandate is to support women and girls to explore careers in the industry, through education, networking and industry events. The group has over 1000 members across Canada, and the Vancouver chapter hosts meetings with industry guest speakers at the BCIT downtown campus the last Thursday of every month at 6:30 p.m. THEIR NEXT MEETING IS ON OCTOBER 30TH, 2000. The meetings are a great opportunity to network and stay abreast of the high tech industry's latest developments. New members are always welcome.
