Directed by the talented Richard Benjamin, My Favorite Year is an amusing tale set in the world of 1950s television. Benjy Stone (Linn-Baker) is a junior writer on The King Kaiser Show which is a popular comedy/variety show. This weeks guest is 1930s matinee idol Alan Swann (OToole) - a hero of swashbuckling films á la Errol Flynn. But like Flynn hes a womanizing boozer who must be baby-sat and the duty falls to Benjy. Wary at first with the immense responsibility, Benjy and Swann soon form a fast friendship that results in some silly scenes and a bit of baby sitting on both sides. As the day of the show arrives, Swann learns that it is to be broadcast live and he panics with stage fright! Guilted into appearing as he promised, Swann makes a great rope swinging entrance and inadvertently saves the host from being killed by a gangster! Yes, its comedy and adventure with lots of laughs all around.
