Chocolat (2000)

Starring: Juliette Binoche, Johnny Depp & Judi Dench.

Think of all the words that can describe chocolate: sweet, luscious, delicious, desirable etc. and you have the latest movie from director Lasse Hallström. “Chocolat” is the tale of Vianne and her young daughter who blow into a small, sleepy French town in 1959 and shake it up by opening a Chocolatrie at the beginning of Lent. Vianne tempts the abstaining inhabitants with delectable goodies and a friendly ear. Soon the very straight-laced and pious mayor (played marvelously by Alfred Molina) is fearing for the souls of his townspeople and trying to run the uncompliant shopkeeper out of town by using all means necessary. With a little help from an Irish gypsy (Johnny Depp) and a lot of her chocolate treats, Vianne manages to break down the town’s resistance and stages a huge Chocolate Festival for Easter. Shot beautifully, and wonderfully adapted from Joanne Harris’ novel of the same name, “Chocolat” will have you salivating and craving some of the sweet stuff.
