Netiquette
If Emily Post could see into the future, I'm sure she would have included a section on netiquette (etiquette on the Internet). But until another goddess of grace and good manners puts together the definitive guide to proper e-manners, you will just have to do with vancouverwomen.com's interpretation. Here are some basic rules of netiquette along with some stuff that's just nice to know!
- If you wouldn't say it to someone's face, it's a pretty good indication that you shouldn't be saying it to them online.
- Use capital letters sparingly - they are the equivalent of SHOUTING. The use of all caps is considered rude.
- Before you post anything, consider whether or not you will be making a positive contribution. Will your posting be of interest to a considerable number of people? If not, perhaps you should be using private email instead.
- Be understanding and tolerant when others make mistakes we were all newbies at one time or another!
- Be wary that lack of body language or other visual cues can easily lead to misunderstandings and hurt feelings. The use of a smiley or emoticon, (though nauseatingly cute sometimes) will make sure that what was said in jest won't be misinterpreted ;-)
